Sydney-based Jim Cornish and Stewart Nicholls established ecowash mobile in March 2004 as a completely waterless mobile car washing and detailing franchise system.

with water restrictions becoming tougher around Australia and a population becoming increasingly time-poor, car owners have started considering smarter ways to keep their cars clean and help Australia’s thirsty climate. as a result, the demand for Ecowash Mobile and its waterless concept has grown quickly.

by making the opportunity available through the franchise business mobile, ecowash mobile has established a team of entrepreneurs throughout Australia and in several overseas markets.

ecowash mobile won the 2005 Australia Post Small Business Awards (Getting Started Category) and the 2006 Small Business Awards Champion of Champions (Automotive Services category). in March 2006, the franchise was also awarded the ‘Smart Approved Watermark’, the nation’s reference for choosing products, services and organisations that are reducing outdoor water use. in April 2007, Ecowash Mobile was listed in BRW’s ‘Fast Starters’ list for Australian companies. in September 2007 ecowash mobile was named 2007 FCA Emerging Franchise System of the Year (NSW/ACT) in the PricewaterhouseCoopers Excellence in Franchising Awards and won the 2007 Australian Business Award for Enterprise (in its industry category).

the founders

both former race and rally drivers, Jim Cornish and Stewart Nicholls bring complementary backgrounds to the company.

operations director Stewart Nicholls has had extensive experience as a qualified motor mechanic whilst managing his own business as well as working at a dealership. it has helped him understand not only the opportunities but also the market ecowash mobile operates in. Stewart is also former Chairman of the NSW Rally Advisory Panel.

managing director Jim Cornish has a background in sales and marketing having held several senior corporate marketing positions with companies such as Nestle Purina, where he was Category Marketing Director (Speciallist Channels) for Asia, Africa and Oceania. He also holds MBA qualifications.

the team

ecowash Mobile grew from a two-car Sydney-based operation to currently having 42 franchisees operating 50 mobile units all across Australia washing around seven cars a day which equates to a saving of about 315,000 litres of water a week*. the business has also taken off overseas and is now established and operational in Saudi Arabia, UAE (United Arab Emirates), Bahrain, Jordan, France and the USA.

further launches are also confirmed for Greece and Switerland and ecowash mobile directors are discussing more agreements with other countries including Egypt.

new franchisees receive two weeks of intensive training along with a comprehensive operations manual and once on board have access to continued business contact, regular counselling meetings, field visits and national public relations and marketing.

by offering franchisees an exclusive product range, a flexible franchise agreement (which enables sub-franchising and multiple mobile units) and a fixed fee structure, ecowash mobile has achieved strong growth in the face of an apparent downturn in the franchising sector and a franchisee ‘churn’ rate of less than 10 percent.

* The traditional hose method of washing a car uses 180 litres of water per wash (Sydney Water).

the concept

the exclusive ecowash mobile product range includes a biodegradable 2-in-1 wash and polish which is sprayed onto the car exterior. it separates and then encapsulates surface dirt which is then removed with a soft cloth, leaving behind a protective coating that lasts for four to six weeks. the whole process is scratch free.

windscreens and windows are also kept crystal clear using a glass treatment that acts as a polish for dispersing rain droplets and creating an anti-fog, anti-static shield, as well as being friendly to tinted windows.

the complete range of products enables a full detail inside and out including leather treatment, bumper renovation and scratch removal. to ensure long lasting protection of cars, ecowash mobile has also introduced protection options for paint, fabric and carpet or leather.

a variety of services are on offer, from a basic waterless wash and polish right through to a full detail, to suit individual car owners, car dealers, smash repairers and corporate fleets.
